7 COVID-19 Measures You Should Know About Before Visiting Canada

April 29, 2021
covid 19 measures canada

Travel over the past year has been a whirlwind. Changing restrictions and new safety measures have made international travel a difficult maze of new rules depending on the airport or country you arrive in. Luckily, for travelers coming into Canada, there is some clarity.

COVID-19 definitely disrupted many plans in 2020, but after a year of dealing with this novel virus, Canadian governments and travel institutions can now offer better guidelines for international travel.

Here are seven measures you should know when visiting Canada as we deal with the COVID-19 global pandemic.

1. Masks and Face Coverings

This is the big one.

To help reduce the spread of COVID-19, travelers entering Canada through major ports, including airports, transit stations, etc., must wear masks/face coverings at all times.

At Pearson Airport in Toronto, this includes the pre-and post-security screening areas of the terminals, parking facilities, people mover train, sidewalks/curbs outside the terminals, and other outdoor public areas.

There are several special exceptions to this rule in effect. If you have a medical condition that prevents you from wearing a mask, you are exempt from the rule provided you have a note from a medical doctor that certifies that you are unable to wear a mask for medical reasons.

2. COVID-19 Testing Before and Upon Arrival

As of February 21, 2021, air travelers will be required to take a COVID-19 molecular test upon landing in Canada.  This testing can occur at the airport or later during their mandatory quarantine period in either a designated quarantine facility or at a suitable place of quarantine.

Before leaving the airport, travelers will also receive a COVID-19 test kit or instructions for taking their test later during their mandatory 14-day quarantine period.

3. Mandatory Quarantine Period

When first coming to Canada, there is a mandatory 14-day self-isolation period for international travelers and social distancing precautions for everyone.

For those coming from specific international hot spots, travelers are to go to a pre-booked hotel while they await the results of their arrival test.

If the test is negative, travelers will continue their quarantine in their home, short-term rental, or designated residence and complete their test kit as instructed.

However, if positive, travelers will be relocated to a designated quarantine facility or other suitable places of quarantine until medically released.

4. Social Distancing Measures

Apart from wearing masks and constant hand-washing, maintaining social distancing when possible is how we can help combat this pandemic.

Many stores, public venues, and restaurants will have limited sitting or restrictions to how many patrons they can accommodate at a time. Keep this in mind when making plans for outings as there might be longer than usual waiting times or queues for shopping.

At DelSuites, your short-term rental allows you to maintain social distancing and have a home away from home. Guests can enjoy premium amenities like a personal kitchen and high-speed internet, so their stay is comfortable and stress-free.

5. Pre-Booked Hotel Upon Arrival

Before departure to Canada, air travelers will need to reserve a 3-night stay in a government-authorized hotel. These new measures are in addition to existing mandatory pre-boarding and health requirements for air travelers with limited exemptions.

Also, the Government of Canada has announced new travel restrictions, including a suspension of flights to Mexico and the Caribbean from January 31, 2021, to April 30, 2021.  New testing and quarantine requirements are also evolving with developments in the pandemic on public health.

6. Restrictions for Meeters and Greeters at the Airport

Are you heading back home? Make sure to say your goodbyes before reaching the airport.

To maintain social distancing and limit high-volume traffic, many major airports have limited terminal access to passengers traveling on the same day and airport employees on duty. Meeters and greeters or those dropping friends and loved ones off at the airport won’t be able to enter the terminals.

7. Stay-At-Home Orders

In some COVID-19 hotspots, government bodies have implemented more strict social distancing measures to curb the spread of the virus and its newly emerging variants.

Depending on the city you are traveling to, make sure to be prepared and informed of possible stay-at-home orders. This preparation can dramatically alter your trip and how you can spend your time in the country.

8. Providing a Safe, Secure, and Cozy Home Away From Home

Traveling to any country can be stressful, especially during COVID-19. With so many restrictions, it can be hard to fully enjoy your trip.  However, having a temporary home with DelSuites’ short-term rentals can make all the difference.

When it comes to travel security and safety, you can be confident you are in good hands. Protecting our guests and associates is our number one priority. January 25, 2021
Toronto rental condo the republic

Here at DelSuites, we’ve provided fully-furnished short-term accommodations for communities all around Toronto, North York, Scarborough, and many others. We choose our locations based on the richness of the local communities, the availability of local amenities, and the general atmosphere that many of Canada’s locations have to offer.

Let’s take a close look at one of our locations, specifically: the Republic.

This property is located at 25 Broadway Avenue in the Midtown Republic region. This rental spot gives you access to the Yonge and Eglinton neighborhoods that are perfect for vacationers and busy workers.

You have access to grocery stores, restaurants, parks, and even movie theaters for a vibrant social scene. Don’t forget the useful utilities like public transportation and corporate offices. There are plenty of hidden gems and secrets in town when you look, but here are some essential locations to get you started.

Local Restaurants

One of the best things about Yonge and Eglinton is the abundance of must-try restaurants. Here are a few personal favorites that we recommend.

Himalayan Coffee House

Ever been to one of those fancy coffee houses where you can get handcrafted latte art alongside your light snack from the bakery? You can get that experience near midtown through this well-regarded coffee shop.

Take a look at Instagram and other social media channels to see some of the cute designs you might find when you visit.

Uncle Betty’s Diner

Craving for breakfast in the late afternoon? This diner offers all-day breakfasts along with other casual eats. The premium menu complements well with the relaxed, retro-styled interior.

Salads and sandwiches are a specialty here, but international visitors must try the local poutine on offer. Canada is well-known for its mastery of the dish.

The Captain’s Boil

This one is slightly farther away, but it’s well worth the walk for any seafood lover. Getting its name from Cajun seafood boils, this restaurant’s menu offers high-quality seafood combined with a rich blend of spices and seasonings for a truly unique taste you won’t find elsewhere. You can even customize the amount of heat, ranging from simple non-spicy to smoking hot fire.

But that doesn’t mean the place is too formal. In fact, it encourages interacting directly with the dish using your hands! Relax with family and friends here when you get the chance.

De Mello Coffee

While not an official restaurant, De Mello is a brand you won’t want to miss. This company is dedicated to responsible sourcing of house-roasted coffee beans. When you buy coffee from De Mello, you can trust that it was sourced responsibly and provides economic and social benefits to those regions from where it comes from.

While you’re here check out their gift bundles as well as full sets perfect for any coffee lover in your family or friend group. For a truly unique coffee experience, De Mello Coffee is closeby and within walking distance of your rental here.

Stores and Grocers

The nearby Metro grocery store has almost everything you could ever need for your kitchen, and you can get many other personal hygiene and beauty products from your local Shoppers Drug Mart.

In need of emergency office supplies or tech accessories? Canada Computers has you covered, with plenty of repair parts, extra cords, and other paraphernalia for when you need to take office work to your home. Best Buy and Staples are both here as well.

Education

In addition to the North Toronto Collegiate Institute, the Toronto Public Library has a branch next door. Finding a quick reference or book to read is easy and accessible this way.

There’s also the Hansa Language Centre for any international travelers looking to brush up their English skills. The location was founded as far back as 1969, so it has plenty of experience in this field. There are even online classes if you need them.

Other Amenities

In terms of local travel, you won’t be in need of a car thanks to the close proximity to amenities and stores. If you ever need to make your way downtown or elsewhere, the Eglinton TTC station has you covered. It’s only a few feet away.

On Sundays, the St. Monica’s Catholic Church is open nearby on 44 Broadway Avenue. Beautiful wood furniture and ceiling lights provide the perfect atmosphere for a Sunday service.

Short-Term Rentals and Cold Weather: What You Need to Know

January 22, 2021
short-term rentals in winter

Whether you’re here for business or personal travel, Toronto is a beautiful city that has a lot to offer. It’s also known for its infamously cold weather, so it’s important that you’re prepared for a Toronto winter.

In addition to packing a winter jacket, it’s important to look for short-term accommodations that are prepared for winter temperatures.

What are some things to be aware of when searching for a short-term rental in Toronto during the winter season? Make your trip a pleasant and comfortable one by making sure your destination is properly “winterized.”

Are You Looking at Home-Sharing Options?

Thousands of homes are available on popular home-sharing services in Toronto. But there are a few things you should be aware of, especially during the colder winter months. Home-sharing services don’t always verify hosts, which means you may encounter things like:

  • Poorly maintained roof, windows and doors. This may lead to leaks, cold air drafts, and other unpleasant experiences.
  • Problems with plumbing and hot water. It’s not uncommon for pipes in older homes to freeze, which could leave you without access to hot water or a place to stay.
  • Issues with the primary heating source. A winter stay in Toronto means you need access to a reliable heating source. Heating in older homes can quit unexpectedly if it’s not properly maintained.

You shouldn’t have to deal with these complicated issues by yourself. Find a location where the management is responsible enough to cover these potential problems.

Will You Be Close to Amenities?

For the few times you will need to be outside, see how far you will need to travel. Ideally choose a property that’s close enough to grocery stores, pharmacies, restaurants, or other locations so that you won’t be outside for long.

Some properties can provide internal services like laundry to minimize the need to go outside. Others might even have some hot chocolate or coffee makers included in the package.

Does the Property Have Supplies Already?

It’s not uncommon for some short-term rentals to have extra equipment in case the cold weather hits hard. Your unit may contain extra blankets and other supplies to improve your stay.

If you’re planning to drive, make sure your rental has parking spaces that are shoveled and salted, or underground parking that’s protected from the weather.

What About Safety?

Safety is extremely important when dealing with cold winter conditions. We recommend looking for a unit that receives proper snow removal and salting.

You also want to rent a unit that comes with frequent cleaning. Given the current pandemic, look for short-term rentals that offer deep cleaning services.

Will You Be Ready to Stay Indoors For a While?

While it may sound silly, getting bored while being stuck indoors is always a possibility. Check if your short-term rental includes high-speed Internet, television, or even a space to put all your books and board games in case you find yourself inside for too long.

How Responsive Is the Property Manager?

Excellent communication is key to a positive experience in a short-term rental. Check reviews or references from other clients to see whether a property manager responds to concerns and support tickets.

In the event an accident or issue does occur, you want to make sure you will have help available. Ask how quickly the response from the property is and whether the property manager was able to fix the problem.

What Times Call For Short-Term Rentals in Toronto?

January 19, 2021
landscape of short-term rentals in toronto

The next time you’re browsing the Toronto real estate market, think about how long you need your new accommodation for. Unless it’s a truly long-term stay, it’s worth looking at the short-term rental market in Toronto for potential savings while still retaining the benefits of a fully-furnished living space.

Many property renters think that short-term accommodations are just a niche market and aren’t aware of the many use cases of such a rental. In truth, it’s an incredibly lucrative market that offers the perfect balance between cost and quality for certain situations.

Don’t dismiss the possibility of getting a great experience from a short-term rental, which can offer significantly more flexibility compared to a standard hotel.

Let’s talk about some use cases for short-term rentals in Toronto and when exactly you would need one.

Why Short-Term At All?

Short-term stays are popular with many renters in the city, who flock to these locations for several reasons:

  • The ubiquity of smartphones and the Internet have enabled a massive market for short-term listings, especially in major cities like Toronto.
  • The result is a large selection to choose from, ensuring that you will likely find exactly what you want.
  • Because the spaces are fully-furnished, it will feel more like home as opposed to other temporary rentals.
  • They save money in the long run compared to hotels which charge by the day. Booking a short-term rental is easy as well.

A short-term accommodation makes sense when other options are either too expensive or insufficiently furnished for your needs. This setup is also ideal for providers of the rental properties, who have more flexibility when it comes to scheduling and maintenance. You won’t have issues finding a suitable location in Toronto as a result.

Specific Use Cases For Short-Term Rentals in Toronto

What are some situations that call for short-term rentals? There are many instances when you need a place to stay without the heavy commitment of a long-term home or apartment. At the same time, perhaps a hotel room that charges by the day doesn’t make financial sense, and you need something a little more professional than just someone’s private room.

There are no limitations to what role a short-term rental can fulfill, so don’t be afraid to consult this market if you feel like your specific case calls for one. However, some examples to get started include business trips, immigration, holidays, moving between houses, and disaster recovery.

Business Trips

Because Toronto is considered an economic hub for Canada, the most common reason people stay in the city is business trips. With the city’s high property prices, going short-term is often the best decision.

Many companies host meetings and events in the city, resulting in many professionals living in Toronto for a few months. Fully-furnished short-term rental spaces are there to serve their needs.

Immigration

For similar reasons to business trips, Canada is a common destination for foreign immigrants thanks to the business opportunities and available space in the nation. Short-term rentals work well in this case since you have the chance to learn about your local area and complete any paperwork before you find more permanent housing.

The flexibility of this type of accommodation goes into play significantly here. When you haven’t entirely figured out your general working and living situation, look to the short-term market for answers. You’ll be glad you did.

Holidays

A short-term rental that lasts a few weeks or months is often an excellent alternative to hotels for long-distance tourism. Instead of allowing the high rates of hotels to eat into the travel budget, many vacationers choose a short-term rental instead.

While Moving

When it comes to selling and buying a new home, you can’t always line up the dates perfectly. There’s likely an amount of time after you’ve sold the old property and before you can move into your new one.

In this case, the short-term rental market is the perfect way to fill the gap. You don’t even have to move all your belongings in either, since most furniture is already available at the temporary location.

Disaster Recovery

While we don’t want to think about it, we have to plan for major incidents like house fires or natural disasters. While you’re looking to repair or replace your old home, a short-term rental works as a cheaper alternative to hotels for a few months.
