7 Reasons to Live in Scarborough, Toronto

February 12, 2023
Furnished Apartments in Scarborough, Condo Rentals

When it was first settled by the Europeans in the 1790s, Scarborough wasn’t much more than a small collection of farms and tiny villages. Now amalgamated into the present city of Toronto, this metropolitan area has grown significantly and it has a lot to offer.

It’s one of the largest districts in the Greater Toronto area and its population is wonderfully diverse, thanks to waves of new immigrants over the years. It’s a vibrant, exciting place to live and there are so many things to see and do.

Here are 5 reasons you’ll love Scarborough:

Reasons to Live in Scarborough

1. There’s Plenty of Great Food

Scarborough has no shortage of places to fill up on something delicious. There’s the iconic Johnny’s Hamburgers, a retro diner that has been a local favourite since the 1970s. You’ll also find dim sum, bento boxes, sushi, ramen, roti and many other diverse dishes at various eateries throughout the neighbourhood.

When it comes time for dessert, you can head to Patisserie Royale and try the wonderfully flaky baklava. Or, the divine crème Brule at 0109 Dessert & Chocolate

2. It’s Safe

According to Toronto Police, the crime rate in Scarborough is three percent lower than it is in the rest of Toronto. Although Scarborough has a reputation for high crime rates, these are unfounded and many city councillors have spoken out about how unfair and untrue they are.

It’s a friendly, safe place to live and there are many excellent schools – making Scarborough a great choice for families with young children.

3. It’s Incredibly Green

Scarborough has a reputation for being greener than any other part of Toronto. The northeast area of the suburb is mostly rural, with some of the last remaining farms in the Greater Toronto Area. Also, this neighborhood includes some of the most popular natural landmarks in the city, such as the Toronto Zoo and Rouge National Urban Park.

On a warm day, you can enjoy the fresh air and go for a swim in the river. Rouge Beach is a hidden gem that is one of the prettiest spots in Scarborough. It’s peaceful, relaxing and lined with soft sand. Or, take a walk along the Scarborough Bluffs and admire the steep cliffs and stunning views. Being outdoors is good for your health, so this is one of the most important reasons to live in Scarborough.

4. There’s Plenty of Great Shopping

Another great reason to base yourself in Scarborough is the city’s fantastic shopping scene. You’ll find a lot of great options for fashion at the Scarborough Town Centre. It’s a massive mall with lots of selection – so you’ll be sure to find what you are looking for.

5. You Can Be Active

The parks, beaches and green spaces mentioned above make it easy to stay healthy and active when living in Scarborough. A beautiful hike, run or bike ride is never far away. This is another one of the great reasons to live in Scarborough.

But even in the winter, it’s possible to lead an active lifestyle here, thanks to the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre. This facility has everything from swimming pools, a climbing wall, a gym, drop-in classes and much more.

6. It’s an Affordable Place to Live

Some areas of Canada have become so expensive they are almost unattainable. However, it’s still reasonably affordable to live in Scarborough. The prices of housing and rental apartments are accessible, yet you’ll still be within reasonable proximity to Toronto.

Living in Scarborough means that you’ll still be within a short subway ride from the city. Yet, you’ll be able to avoid ridiculous prices.

7. It’s a Hotbed of Talent

This vibrant Eastern suburb has been home to some of the biggest talents to come out of Canada. There’s musician The Weeknd (aka Abel Tesfaye), actor Mike Myers and singer Deborah Cox. The Barenaked Ladies formed in 1988 in Scarborough and members Jim Creeggan and Ed Robertson are from there.

Scarborough is also the hometown of Olympic sprinter Andre de Grasse, Former Ontario Lieutenant Governor David Onley, actor Eric McCormack (of Will and Grace fame) and actress and comedian Debra McGrath. So, if you choose to live in Scarborough you should know that you’ll be in good company.

4 Reasons Why Scarborough Apartments for Rent Are Going Fast in 2021

February 22, 2021
scarborough apartments

Are you looking for the right Scarborough apartments for rent? Finding the right place to live isn’t easy. But With DelSuites, we make finding your next place that much easier.

While Scarborough is often viewed as its own city or region by visitors, it’s very much part of the City of Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). Invisible borders and boundaries detach it from Toronto and the downtown Toronto core, but traveling to and from Scarborough and Toronto is quick and easy.

Even if you work or study in Toronto, living in Scarborough can be a great experience. In this article, we’ll discuss why you should consider a Scarborough apartment for your short-term stay and why others are renting and buying in too.

1. There’s Limited Space in Toronto

Space is limited in Toronto. With zoning bylaws, existing structures, and high population density, there’s only so much real estate to go around. This can make it difficult for renters to find that perfect place in Toronto.

While Scarborough is considered its distinct area, it’s still a part of Toronto. If you are in Toronto to work or looking to experience a new area of the city, try a Scarborough apartment for rent near the Old City boundaries.

2. It’s a Landlord’s Market

We’re living in a landlord’s market—and thanks to the pandemic—many people are staying put. Low vacancy rates, high demand, increasing rents, and similar factors favor landlords in the housing market.

A landlord’s market is not a new phenomenon in Toronto either. When you have a world-class city, it shouldn’t surprise you that people want to move here.

This is not a description of doom and gloom for the average renter, though. When you are in a landlord’s market, it’s an excellent time to participate as well, even for a short time with a short-term rental.

Scarborough is a great city to work in, live in, and our units are kid-friendly, making it a suitable alternative to the hustle and bustle of the downtown core.

3. More People Are Migrating to Toronto for Work

Toronto is a world-class city. Many things are happening in the city, especially for youths and young working professionals.

The city features its own financial district with many established companies. Our universities are among the best in the world. Many sports teams train and play here. This makes Toronto an attractive place for families, working professionals, and business travel.

4. Toronto’s Real Estate Market Continues to Boom

Many residents and visitors, both from overseas and around Canada, migrate to Toronto. Toronto offers that big city feel, an enriching cultural experience, and straightforward transit routes.

Education is also excellent in Toronto, with many world-class institutions and the downtown core featuring several notable hospitals, clinics, and other professional services.

But with this attraction comes a price—high rents and limited apartments. These real estate trends are one of the main reasons why Scarborough continues to grow in popularity for families and professionals looking for a more affordable place to live.

The DelSuites Difference: Great Locations & Exceptional Service

DelSuites offers furnished short-term apartment rentals, perfect for the staycationer or short-term student or businessperson. Scarborough is a very family friendly area of Toronto. With several great museums, parks, community centres and recreational facilities – there’s always something to do to keep the kids busy and occupied.

If you’re planning to head out and explore some of the family activities in Scarborough, here are some ideas:

Scarborough Museum

Learn about the past of the community at this museum, set within historical buildings in a 19th century garden in Thomson Memorial Park. This area was once the farm fields where Scarborough’s first settlers lived and the museum tells the story of Scarborough from the first founding to its growth into a major suburb.

While you are there, you can also explore the beautiful walking trails of Thomson Memorial Park with your family. This is one of the most popular family activities in Scarborough and it’s something kids of all ages can enjoy.

East Point Park

Take a hike with your children in East Point Park, a beautiful bird sanctuary where hundreds of migratory birds make their home. One of the largest parkland areas in Toronto, there are over 178 species of birds here – as well as monarch butterflies.

Your little ones can learn about birds and watch them from the weathered steel pavilion bird blinds. You can also get down to the natural beach by walking from the end of Beechgrove and Copperfield Road.

The Toronto Zoo

Another one of the best family activities in Scarborough is the Toronto Zoo. It’s one of the best zoos in Canada and even one of the largest in the world. At this amazing zoo, you’ll find more than 5,000 different animals, representing a total of more than 450 species.

You’ll see creatures from all over the world, from Africa to the Arctic Tundra to Europe and more. There’s even a five acre Polar Bear habitat you can check out, as well as an underwater viewing area. If your little ones are fascinated by animals, this is a wonderful place for them to explore.

Kidstown Water Park

On a hot summer’s day, Kidstown Water Park is the perfect place for young kids to play. It’s one of the most well-loved Toronto outdoor water facilities for grade school and preschool children and it offers an exciting collection of water features, including spray rings, a tipping bucket, squirting aquatic animals and more.

There’s also a lovely picnic area, where you can relax and keep an eye on your children while you have a picnic in the sunshine. The park is open from late June to early September.

Agincourt Recreation Centre & Leisure Pool

One of only two leisure pools in Scarborough, Agincourt Recreation Centre provides lessons, swims and other activities for families. It’s also home to a tennis club and two indoor rinks for skating.

The centre also features the “Snoezelen Room” for children with disabilities. It features soft textures, soothing music and colours designed to be comforting for children with sensory processing issues. Regular sessions in the room have shown to improve relaxation, increase attention span and help with behaviour issues.

Hit the Beach

Scarborough is home to two beaches where you can picnic, hike, sunbathe and swim. Bluffer’s Park is located near the southern part of Brimley Road and it is surrounded by great nature trails. Even in the cooler months when swimming isn’t possible, it’s a spectacular place for a walk.

There’s also Rouge Beach. It’s part of Rouge Beach Park, which is located along the eastern edge of the city. Both of these beaches have great facilities including changing rooms.

Go Exploring in Rouge National Urban Park

Scarborough is known for having amazing nature and green spaces. Rouge National Urban Park is another gorgeous park where you can go on outdoor adventures. It is open all year round and accessible by public transit.

There’s so much to discover here – from hiking trails to bird-watching hotspots to great fishing. In fact, it’s considered the largest urban park in North America. It even offers camping spots, so you can spend a peaceful night under the stars without leaving the city.

Don’t miss the oxtail stew – only available Thursday through Saturday and fall-off-the-bone-good.

Johnny’s Charbroiled Hamburgers

Johnny’s has been serving up classic charbroiled burgers for 50 years – so you know you can’t go wrong. They are simple, juicy and delicious – and they only cost $3.30. You can pair that with a milkshake for another three bucks, or make it a double for only $1.65. You can’t go wrong!

Plus, there’s the fries – which were once praised for their crispness by Scarborough famous native Mike Myers. It’s a Scarborough institution – so it’s certainly worth giving it a try the next time your hamburger cravings strike.

It is then served with spicy sauce in wraps, dinners and even on poutine. There’s nothing quite like a Samosa. The deep fried pastry, the rich, curried filling, the satisfying flavor. These mouth-watering, crispy vegetarian samosas are irresistible – and they are only $1 for 5 of them. Talk about cheap eats! This might be one of the best cheap eats in Scarborough – so be sure to give them a try. The menu also has other wonderful South Indian specials, such as Vegetable Thali, Meat Thali, Egg Masala Dosa and more. It’s a great place to have a quick snack, or to share a bunch of different dishes with a group of friends.

This takeout spot has been serving up some of the city’s best Sri Lankan food for over 25 years. A wonderfully filling and affordable dish is the Lamprais for $8.45, which includes five different curries, dried eggs and eggplant pickle – all wrapped in a banana leaf. It’s a steaming, aromatic package with enough food inside to feed several people. The Kothu Roti is also divine – make with a vibrant blend of spices along with veggies, curry and egg. (Not to mention the butter naan which is baked in the traditional charcoal tandoor oven.)

Shawarma Empire

Hidden in a humble strip mall in Scarborough, this popular eatery still boasts a steady line throughout the day. That’s because the big juicy shawarma they serve has quite a reputation. All the dishes are made from scratch in-house, without any preservatives – so it’s fresh and juicy. They even make their own falafel in house, grinding and soaking their own chickpeas. The flavorful, perfectly cooked meat (beef or chicken) is served with all the fixin’s – including pickled turnip, lettuce and the unforgettable garlic sauce. It’s cash only, so make sure you have enough in your wallet before you join the line.

Pho Metro

Sometimes, you simply crave the warm, rich, satisfying broth of a steaming bowl of Vietnamese Pho. Pho Metro is a very affordable and delicious place to dine on vermicelli, pho and other hearty and satisfying Vietnamese dishes. The meals here are very affordable and will fill you up.
