Take Our Kids to Work Day with DelSuites

On Wednesday November 5^th, Tridel and the Group of Companies participated in Take Our Kids to Work. All grade 9 students were welcome to our offices to experience a day in the life of an adult.

Take Our Kids to Work^TM is an annual nationalprogram in which Grade 9 (or equivalent) students are hosted by parents, friends, relatives and volunteers at workplaces across the country every November.

The goal of The Take Our Kids To Work program is to help students:

Develop an appreciation for the importance of staying in school and getting a high school diploma and pursuing post-secondary studies
Gain exposure to the skills required in today’s workplace
Develop an appreciation for their parents or relatives’ roles in supporting their families
Begin career discussions with adults about the work they do
Explore career options in a practical way

Yesterday marked the 20th anniversary of Take Our Kids to Work Program. DelSuites was very proud to take part in this program. We hope Nasim had a great day and learned alot from the reservations, guest services and marketing departments!

10 Family Fun Activities in Toronto

When it comes to keeping your children occupied, you can choose from a multitude of family fun activities in Toronto. The chosen activities in the metropolis are all near your furnished apartment, with the exception of a few great day trips, that are must-sees just outside of the city. Here are a few of our favourite places to spend with your loved ones of all ages.

Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada
Ripley’s is an interactive and educational experience for the whole family. Discover over 16,000 aquatic creatures and be mesmerized by the the longest underwater viewing tunnel in North America. The daily dive shows are also a treat and may inspire your little ones to become a scuba diver one day. Special experiences include birthday parties and sleepovers.

Harbourfront Centre
Whether you’re visiting during major holidays or on breaks (March Break, Summer), there is always something for the kids to do here. Enroll your kids in a camp, a lesson (sailing, skating) or attend one of the many events here that happen every season. If you’re just taking a walk around the area, explore the fun, free structures around the area like the Simcoe Wave Deck. It’s right near our furnished condo at 300 Front Street.

Riverdale Farm
This free attraction can be combined with an exploration of both the historic Cabbagetown neighbourhood and Riverdale Park. Known as Toronto’s first zoo, it closed in 1974 to relocate to Scarborough. You can still see the remains of three of the original zoo buildings at the farm (Donnybrook Ruin, the Island House, and the Resident Zookeeper’s House). Not only is the farm and its surrounding area a great way to see the animals, it’s a great way to learn about Toronto’s history.

The AGO and ROM
Both the Art Gallery of Ontario and the Royal Ontario Museum offer a number of educational and cultural activities and camps for kids of all ages.

The Toronto Zoo
Family Fun Activities in Toronto Explore the wildlife and wildlife spaces in a fun and interactive way. Divided into seven zoogeographic regions (from Africa to the Tundra Trek), there are a variety of animals and geographies to discover with your kids. Features include the New Gorilla Climb Ropes courses, the Xie Shou Giant Panda Experience and interpretive centre, the Great Barrier Reef exhibit, and the Kids Discovery Zone (including a splash pad and bird shows).

High Park
As one of Toronto’s largest park, High Park offers plenty of family fun activities in Toronto. Walk around the park and bring your kids to the Jamie Bell Adventure Park across from the Duck Pond. Down the trail, the free zoo is an added bonus. The kids will love learning about the lamas, buffalos, bisons, deer, and peacocks on display. In the spring, the cherry blossoms are a scenic display for an afternoon walk.

Centre Island
This main island, located on the Toronto Islands, is a great day trip for your kit and caboodle. Although closed for the 2014 season, during the summertime, pack a picnic, travel on the ferry to the island, and check out the amusement park, Centreville, with over 30 rides, both land and water based. Nearby, the Far Enough Farm offers over 40 different species of farmyard animals and exotic birds on display. If your kids are a bit older, you can ride bikes around the various islands to the beaches and find those picturesque spots to view the city skyline. There really is nothing like the Islands on a sunny day!

Treetop Trekking
For the adventurous family who has the time to travel to the Greater Toronto Area, Brampton Park offers treetop aerial game and zip line adventures. Swing like Tarzan and balance on logs and suspended bridges in the popular zip line and aerial course tour; or zip on the various lines with your kit and caboodle. Older kids can participate in the night treks. Do check the minimum ages for each activity.

Niagara Falls
A great day trip away from Toronto, the falls introduces your kids to one of the wonders of the world and can be explored from atop or below through various tours like the Maid of the Mist or Whirlpool jet boat. Beyond the falls, there are a variety of fun activities like a bird kingdom, a butterfly sanctuary, fun houses, and dinosaur adventure golf.

DelSuites at We Day 2014!

We Day 2014 On Thursday October 2, 2014 the team at DelSuites and Del Condominium Rentals volunteered at the annual We Day event at Toronto’s Air Canada Centre. It is the team’s first year of volunteering with this event that has gained attention around the country. We wanted to share this experience with you and educate you about this wonderful event and how anyone at any age can get involved with charity.

What is We Day? We Day 2014
Brothers, Craig and Marc Kielburger of non-profit organization Free the Children, created We Day in 2007 as a movement for youth to come together to create change and make the world a better place. The Kielburgers have redefined charity and that anyone at any age can make a difference in their communities. The yearly event held in large venues such as the Air Canada Centre in Toronto kick-starts a year of action through We Act, a one-year commitment for youth to take one local and one global action. Schools and youth groups receive curriculum-based resources, campaign materials and personal support to achieve these goals.

You cannot buy a ticket to We D We Day 2014 ay. Participants earn their “ticket” through the We Act and as a result, youth are empowered to be more engaged and active global citizens. These actions have also extended to the greater community from adults to corporations (like us!) with non-profit involvement.

Why We Day?
All extensions of We Day (We Act, Me to We, and Free The Children) aim to empower a generation to shift the world from “me” to “we”—from a focus on the individual to the power of community. It is the platform for social change, no matter what age. The youth are our future to act and continue sustainable change.

Impact
We Day 2014 We Day has grown by leaps and bounds since its inception seven years ago. From 8,000 participants in 2007 in Toronto to more 278,000 youth attending events in cities across North America, the event is now a movement. Over $37 million dollars has been fundraised for thousands of charities and almost 10 million hours volunteered for local and global causes. Even more so, alumni have continued their efforts to sustain social change and justice, with 80% volunteering for more than 150 hours in a year on average, and 79% of those who are voting age having voted in the most recent national election, double the rate of their peers.

Speakers and Performers, 2014
This year, some of the world’s most renowned speakers and performers joined in We Day in Toronto. Col. Chris Hadfield (the first Canadian to walk in Space), Queen Noor of Jordan, and Katie Couric spoke. Repeat guests include Canadian rockstars Hedley, Lights, and the cast of TV Show Degrassi.

We Day 2014 The energy from those who have accomplished so much in our lives is passed down to our youth who believe and can inspire local and world change beyond this day.

Art Galleries in Toronto

In recent years, Toronto has become a major center for culture. Centres funded by corporations such as the Four Seasons Center for Performing Arts or the Rogers Center, have been renovated or erected in recent years. However, you can experience culture, especially art, on a smaller scale in Toronto while on your extended stay. It is the smaller art galleries that may have some of the best and most local art out there. Here are some of our top picks of Art Galleries in Toronto:

1. Art Gallery of Ontario – Located in central downtown, the AGO is a nice walk from your downtown toronto apartments. In addition to one of the largest and most coveted Canadian collections (featuring the artwork of the members of the Group of Seven) as well as interesting and provocative exhibitions, the AGO holds interactive events every month such as First Thursdays and AGO Next (for members under 40). The AGO is also a regular venue for yearly festivals like Nuit Blanche. You can visit the gallery for free, after 5pm every Wednesday.

2. MOCCA, also known as the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art. Here you will find it tucked away just west of Shaw St. in the heart of the Queen West Art and Design District with the large mural in the parking lot as a signpost. The murals are created for the Scotiabank CONTACT Photography festival every year. Inside, find thought-provoking exhibitions in its minimalist space. 3. Angell Art Gallery – Jamie Angell was one of the pioneers in Queen West’s art gallery development. His gallery is one of the most eponymous and sets the standard for daring and original artwork by risky artists locally. Check out the video installation in the back as you continue along Ossington and Queen Street West for art gallery, restaurant and bar pitstops.

4. Koffler Centre of the Arts is a dynamic contemporary art gallery providing exciting exhibitions, and programs (educational and beyond). The gallery fosters new work by Canadian and international artists and for those who reside in a short term rental in Downtown Toronto. The Qwest, Element, Icon, 300 Front and James Cooper Mansion buildings are a short drive away.

5. Dadashi Gallery – Check out original oil and acrylic paintings in addition to sculptures in North York. You can buy paintings as well as furniture and rugs at this hybrid retail space. If you’re truly feeling inspired, art classes are available.

After a long, harsh winter, Torontonians are taking advantage of one last month of the prime summer season to enjoy festivities, long weekends, and fun activities. Here are a few of our favourite must do’s in August in Toronto that you won’t want to miss!

1. Taste of the Danforth
Over a million visitors flock to Toronto’s Greektown every year to sample some of the best Greek food in the city at discounted prices. There’s plenty to do with tons of performances, yoga demonstrations, and concerts. August 8-10, 2014

2. Rogers Cup
Noted as one of the best tennis tournaments in the world, watch the drama of this fast paced game, which features 44 of the best players in the world, including Rafael Nadal and Canada’s own Milos Raonic. Better than watching it from your furnished apartment in Toronto! August 2-10, 2014

3. FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Canada
Riding off the high of the World Cup Tournament in Brazil this year, the sport’s organization, FIFA has organized a cup for the world’s best female teams under 20 across Canada. You can watch particular matches in Toronto like Costa Rica vs New Zealand and Canada vs Ghana at the National Soccer Stadium. August 5-24, 2014

4. Toronto Islands
One of Toronto’s top attractions just a short ferry ride away from downtown Toronto, the Toronto Islands are a series of connecting islands spanning over 5 km. The ferry isn’t the only way to get there. You can take a water taxi, canoe and kayak from one of the rental places at Harbourfront. Centre Island is a popular island and features Centreville Amusement Park for the kids. If you’re more adventurous, head over to Hanlan’s Point, Toronto’s only nude beach. Pack your picnic, rent a bike, and capture some of the best skyline views of the city.

5. Watch a Blue Jays Game
Baseball games were made for summer, especially at home games when the dome is open at the Rogers Centre. Whether you’re up close or in the nosebleeds, there’s nothing like the excitement of a Jays game. Regular games range from $11 up to $75; and premium games (weekends and pending on team) range from $14 to $210 (“in-the-action” seats behind the home plate).

6. Kensington Market
Every last Sunday of the month, the streets of the eclectic Kensington Market close down to traffic and open up to the public to roam free amongst the music and various activities happening in the area. 7. Roundhouse Craft Beer Festival
Lager lovers will revel in this festival at the headquarters of the Steamwhistle Brewery (across from the Roger’s Centre) which is only a few minutes away from your furnished apartment in Toronto. This festival showcases craft beers specifically from Ontario, such as Great Lakes Brewery, Flying Monkeys, and Left Field. There will also be a multitude of food trucks from the popular Gorilla Cheese to Fidel Gastro’s to whet your appetite. August 9-10, noon until 7pm

8. Free Movies in Interesting Places
Every summer, some of Toronto’s biggest public spaces open up to the public for free movie viewings. Our picks: the Sail-in Cinema at Sugar Beach, where you could dock your boat or watch classics like Jaws, Jurassic Park, and E.T. (August 14, 15, 16); Yonge and Dundas Square across from the Eaton Centre hosts movies every Tuesday at dusk in the summer; and Riverdale Park East for The Wizard of Oz on August 17. The Harbourfront Centre is also showcasing contemporary box office hits at their West Jet Stage on August 13, 20, and 27.

9. Pan American Food Festival
Come celebrate the diversity of the Americas and the Caribbean at Daniel’s Spectrum in Regent Park, where chefs cook the cuisine of a showcased country (Peru, this year). Some of the best Latin American yet Toronto based chefs will be in attendance, including Rossy Earle and Steve Gonzalez. There will also be performances, salsa and bachata dance workshops, and activities for the kids, including a youth World Cup! August 8-10, 2014

10. Eat!
New, haute restaurants open almost every August just in time for the Toronto Film Festival in September. Now is your time to savour every bite at some of the hottest places where the stars will be. Noted openings include: Cluny, Montecito, Pai, and Rush Lane (for cocktails and bar snacks).
