Under the Radar Cities to Visit in the USA

Toronto is a great hub to our neighbour to the south but sometimes the more popular cities are just too…popular or expensive. While you’re in Toronto for a short or long term stay, we found these cities to visit in the USA that are quick jaunts which are alternative destinations to the more celebrated cities you may know and love.

1. If you like San Francisco, try San Diego You can still leave your heart in San Francisco but if you want a change of pace, go south of Los Angeles to San Diego. There’s tons of surf, sunshine, and fish tacos; the ideal combination for an idyllic getaway. As a stopover it’s much closer to cruise port destinations like Mexico. Plus, there’s over 90 craft breweries in the city. If you’re with the family, there’s plenty to such as exploring Legoland, the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, and whale watching (over 20,000 whales migrate here from December to April.)

2. If you like Nashville, try Savannah though Tennessee is experiencing a resurgence beyond Music City (we even named it one of our top destinations for 2015). Home to the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), the city is full of design shops and good eats, just like Nashville. Affordable hotel and flight packages are also in reach so you can stroll amongst the oak trees and fountains, the ideal weekend getaway that may not be as busy as Nashville.

3. If you like New York City, try New Orleans We’ll admit that there really is no place like NYC in the United States but as an alternate destination full of great food, lively entertainment, great shops, and strong cocktails, New Orleans is a great second choice. Likely, it may be friendlier on your wallet and an opportunity to continue to support its residents 11 years after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. Check out its food and drink festivals like the French Quarter Festival in April; the New Orleans Wine and Food Festival, May 20-23; the Oyster festival on May 30, and the boozy Tales of the Cocktail festival in July, which attracts the nation’s best bartenders.

4. If you like Austin, try Oklahoma City Twenty years ago, the only thing Oklahoma City was known for was its downtown bombings. Now, it’s on the verge of attracting a similar young and vibrant demographic to Austin or Portland (Oregon). Artistic types will love the Paseo Arts and DeadCenter film festival in May and June, respectively, without the big crowds and high prices of Austin’s South by Southwest (SXSW) festival phenomenon. In late May, don’t miss out on the H&8th night festival, where live music and food trucks merge together for one night. And if you think you’re missing out on that famous Texan BBQ, chow down on Backdoor BBQ’s “Beastwich,” for fare compare. An hour drive from OKC is the BBQ ‘N Blues festival in Cushing, not something that would be unlikely in Austin. OKC may be the weekend escape you’re looking for this summer that’s a bit closer to your home away from home in Toronto.

5. If you like Portland, try Detroit Though Portland, Oregon easily wins our hearts for its enviable food and beer scene (and multitude of food trucks); easy navigation, and quirky characters, Detroit can offer the same experience without the plane ticket if you’re staying with us for a short or long term stay in Toronto. It has a thriving microbrewery scene; an art scene and many abandoned buildings that are great for photographers; and quaint neighbourhoods like Corktown, home to boutique hotels like Honor & Folly. Give it a try. You might be surprised!

Statutory Holidays in Toronto, 2015

As we begin the new year, one of our plans may be to organize our schedules to our statutory holidays. As most Torontonians get two to four weeks of vacation on average, stat holidays are a great way to maximize that time whether it’s buying new furniture for your apartment or suite or getting out of the city for the weekend. Here is a list of statutory holidays in Toronto for 2015:

New Year’s Day: Thursday January 1, 2015
If you’re not staying at one of our furnished apartments to watch the specials on television, New Year’s Day is a great way to lounge around and think of your goals for 2015 or plan to go take advantage of January’s winter festivals in Toronto if you have an short term rentals Toronto.

Family Day: Monday February 16, 2015
This Monday off is a great way to take advantage of a long weekend or a winter weekend escape just away from the city. DelSuites at We Day 2014!

We Day 2014 On Thursday October 2, 2014 the team at DelSuites and Del Condominium Rentals volunteered at the annual We Day event at Toronto’s Air Canada Centre. It is the team’s first year of volunteering with this event that has gained attention around the country. We wanted to share this experience with you and educate you about this wonderful event and how anyone at any age can get involved with charity.

What is We Day? We Day 2014
Brothers, Craig and Marc Kielburger of non-profit organization Free the Children, created We Day in 2007 as a movement for youth to come together to create change and make the world a better place. The Kielburgers have redefined charity and that anyone at any age can make a difference in their communities. The yearly event held in large venues such as the Air Canada Centre in Toronto kick-starts a year of action through We Act, a one-year commitment for youth to take one local and one global action. Schools and youth groups receive curriculum-based resources, campaign materials and personal support to achieve these goals.

You cannot buy a ticket to We D We Day 2014 ay. Participants earn their “ticket” through the We Act and as a result, youth are empowered to be more engaged and active global citizens. These actions have also extended to the greater community from adults to corporations (like us!) with non-profit involvement.

Why We Day?
All extensions of We Day (We Act, Me to We, and Free The Children) aim to empower a generation to shift the world from “me” to “we”—from a focus on the individual to the power of community. It is the platform for social change, no matter what age. The youth are our future to act and continue sustainable change.

Impact
We Day 2014 We Day has grown by leaps and bounds since its inception seven years ago. From 8,000 participants in 2007 in Toronto to more 278,000 youth attending events in cities across North America, the event is now a movement. Over $37 million dollars has been fundraised for thousands of charities and almost 10 million hours volunteered for local and global causes. Even more so, alumni have continued their efforts to sustain social change and justice, with 80% volunteering for more than 150 hours in a year on average, and 79% of those who are voting age having voted in the most recent national election, double the rate of their peers.

Speakers and Performers, 2014
This year, some of the world’s most renowned speakers and performers joined in We Day in Toronto. Col. Chris Hadfield (the first Canadian to walk in Space), Queen Noor of Jordan, and Katie Couric spoke. Repeat guests include Canadian rockstars Hedley, Lights, and the cast of TV Show Degrassi.

We Day 2014 The energy from those who have accomplished so much in our lives is passed down to our youth who believe and can inspire local and world change beyond this day.
